This is because many major cities in the U.S. are particularly vulnerable to criminal activities after sunset as the crowd on the streets starts thinning in the late evening hours and therefore, it is difficult to get assistance from the residents if the child gets into trouble concerning their physical wellbeing. For example, a recent study showed that New York City reported a majority of the more armed robberies in night hours as compared to the day time. Therefore, sending a young child alone during the night may seem like taking an unnecessary risk.

In addition to safety, the ‘curfew’, as a punishment, also helps to instill a sense of disciple in the growing children. There are instances where youngsters can start acting in an inappropriate manner which may be disrespectful or hurtful to others.
