IELTS Writing Task 2(Sample Answer)

Rich countries should allow jobs for skilled and knowledgeable employees who are from poor countries. To what extent do you agree or disagree? Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

In recent times, there have been increasing calls by educated and experienced professionals from underdeveloped countries to allow them to work in developed nations. I believe that the deserving should be allowed to move around the world and work in high-income countries with a caveat that this movement does not result in undue harassment of the migrant with lower salaries.
One of the most important reasons for international work migration of highly skilled labor is its positive economic impact on the receiving society. It is a well-known fact that because of their expertise, these people often have a hugely positive impact on society by multiple jobs are created creating multiple jobs in the field that did not exist earlier. For instance, Elon Musk migrated to the United States and generated thousands of private jobs in fields like electric cars and space exploration, which were nonexistent earlier.
Nevertheless, I believe that the programmes for international employees of poor countries should be limited to either niche field with high paying jobs or field with a labour shortage. The reason for this is that for a country with abundant workforce in a field, the addition of external labour can cause unemployment among its citizens and can open avenues for the oppression of migrant workers. For instance, there have been multiple documented cases where American citizens were fired and replaced by migrants with salaries far lower than the industry average. Migrants are often ready to take sub-standard wages due to fear of going back to their home countries if they do not get a job. This is even seen for skilled jobs especially in areas like computer sciences where the workforce has increased dramatically in the past decade.

In conclusion, allowing a highly skilled workforce from less developed nations to work in advanced countries provides multiple economic benefits for the rich nations and must be encouraged. However, care must be taken to make sure that the jobs being offered require specialized knowledge and only for the fields where the host nation lacks manpower since there are real dangers of job loss for residents and financial harassment for migrants.
